How to vet a Peruvian superfood supplier
Last updated:
Vetting a Peruvian superfood supplier means verifying twelve things before you place an order: legal identity (RUC), export history, organic and food-safety certifications with valid scope, a certificate of analysis per lot, lot-level traceability to origin, declared Incoterms, packaging spec, lead time, minimum order, sample policy, private-label capability, and who answers when something goes wrong. Any supplier who cannot answer all twelve in writing is a risk.
Buyers ask us this constantly, usually phrased as "how do I know you're real?" It is a fair question — Peru has excellent exporters and it has brokers reselling material they have never seen. Here is the checklist we would use if we were the ones importing, and our own answers next to it. Copy it, take it to our competitors, and make them fill it in too. That is the point.
The 12-point checklist
| # | What to verify | Why it matters | Amazon Andes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Legal identity — a Peruvian tax ID (RUC) you can look up in SUNAT | Distinguishes an exporter of record from a broker with a website | RUC 20548920478, Amazon Andes Export S.A.C. |
| 2 | Year established and continuity of operation | Superfood exporters appear and vanish with commodity cycles | Founded 2011, Lima |
| 3 | Export history — countries actually shipped to | "We export worldwide" is not a fact; a customs history is | 40+ countries invoiced |
| 4 | Organic certification AND its scope | A certificate can be real but not cover the material you are buying | USDA Organic, EU Organic, Canada Organic — scope confirmed per material on request |
| 5 | Food-safety certification of the plant | Certifies the facility, not the paperwork | GMP, HACCP; HALAL where required |
| 6 | Certificate of analysis per lot, not per year | A single COA reused across lots tells you nothing about your lot | COA issued per lot, shipped with the order |
| 7 | Traceability to origin | The difference between a supply chain and a purchase on the spot market | Lot/origin record; 420+ growers under direct or cooperative agreement |
| 8 | Declared Incoterms | Determines who carries cost and risk, and where | EXW · FOB Callao · CIF · DDP |
| 9 | Packaging specification | Drives shelf life, especially for oils and ALA-rich material | 25 kg kraft standard; private label and OEM formats available |
| 10 | Minimum order and scalability | A supplier who cannot start small cannot pilot; one who cannot scale cannot supply | From 25 kg, scalable to full container |
| 11 | Sample policy before purchase | You specify against a sample, not a brochure | Samples available to qualified buyers |
| 12 | Named contact and response time | The real test arrives when a lot is off-spec | Named commercial contact; pricing, specs and lead times within one business day |
Points 4 and 6 are where most deals go wrong. An organic certificate whose scope does not include your material is worthless to your own certifier, and a COA that is not lot-specific will not survive your QA. Ask for both documents before you discuss price — a serious supplier will send them without friction.
Documents to request before the first order
| Document | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Certificate of Analysis (COA) — for your lot | The actual composition and safety of the material you are buying |
| Technical Data Sheet (TDS) | The specification the material is produced against |
| MSDS / SDS | Safe handling, storage and transport |
| Organic certificate with scope annex | That your specific material is covered, not just the company |
| Phytosanitary certificate | Plant-health clearance for import |
| Traceability record | Origin, lot, harvest window |
